Chapter 1. Eating Disorders Info

Eating Disorder Info

Just about every woman in a westernized, pop culture society, especially the young ones, are brainwashed to spends lots of money on trying to be thin and beautiful as defined by frivolous women's magazines and TV cosmetic commercials even if that isn't who you are the way you were born.

The whole idea is based on deficiency and inferiority, that no matter how beautiful, tanned and thin you look, you're never quite there at the level of the perfect beauty, that there's always room for improvement and since many women are their own worst enemies by silently competing with each other and competing with the images in magazines and on TV in this silent beauty and thinness game, they define themselves in the pecking order by this standard hence every social situation is a silent competition as to who's the most beautiful and thinnest in the room.

Eating disorders come in three basic categories;

People who eat too much (compulsive overeaters);

People who starve themselves and/ or exercise compulsively (anorexics);

People who binge eat a lot of food in a short period of time and either shove their finger down their throat to induce vomiting or take large amounts of diuretics in an effort to get rid of it through fecal waste matter (bulimics).

Although the reasons for the eating disorder are different for every individual, the experts seem to think it's an issue of emotions and control, i.e. trying to get a perfect body because they were brainwashed by pop culture and/ or have some unresolved emotional issues.

Compulsive overeaters seem to use food as a substitute for the loneliness, lack of love and inadequacy they feel in their lives.

Anorexics could go any of several ways. It could be just a distorted body image they have gleaned from all the cultural brainwash about the obsession to be thin.

Even though they might look fine, they think they're fat and they equate thinness with beauty although they go over the line into the realm of ghastliness and life threatening skinniness.

According to a TV show on VH1, Karen Carpenter, a pop star from the past, first started becoming anorexic when a few reporters wrote articles describing her as a chubby girl.

From there, she went on to use it to give her control in her life whenever she had emotional downturns like with her troubled love life.

There are a lot of "pro-ana" websites where anorexics give each other tips about losing weight.

Even though some of these people know they're dying of malnutrition, the obsession to be skinny is so strong that they still refuse to eat and many subsequently end up dying.

A sad reflection of modern society is the fact that now many adolescents as young as 10 years old are anorexic.

There are pro-anorexia websites out there where anorexics support each other and give each other tips.

Bulimia is another strange disorder where mostly girls satisfy their food cravings by stuffing themselves with everything and anything for a few hours, then they'll usually go into the shower, shove a finger down their throats and purge/ vomit it up.

Some bulimics get so experienced at it that they lose the gagging reflex and are able to vomit almost at will.

After the binge eating, the expulsion doesn't have to vomitting. It could also be the use of laxatives, dieting, fasting or extreme exercising to avoid gaining the weight. This is commonly called the binge-purge cycle.

Bulimia is not, by itself, generally considered a life-threatening disease but still wreaks havoc. Stomach acid from vomiting can destroy tissue all the way from the teeth to the intestines.

Electrolytes and dehydration can lead to physical problems including heart irregularities and even death.

Vomit contains strong stomach acids which can harm the throat, esophagus, larynx, teeth and mouth area when the vomit comes up. It all comes back to this obsession to be thin.

Another one is Body Dismorphic Disorder where you think you're fat when you look in the mirror although you're normal and thin. You obsess over the way your body looks.

Eating disorders are strange malfunctions because it seems like such a superficial disease all done in order to stay thin but psychologists say it's a deep rooted emotional/ control disorder.

I think it's all a product of simple human weakness. While many people are starving on the planet, these people are so frivolous and superficial that they dedicate their energies to being thin.

People come in all different shapes and sizes. The ideal is to strive to be the best you can be for the body you were born with.

Try to stay in shape and take care of yourself because it's a sign of self-respect but don't take it to the point of vanity nor be a slob and disregard it in favor of your tastebuds.

There's a healthy middle ground there. We are more than food and clothing. We are spiritual beings and peace of mind can only come by self-acceptance but if you let yourself get brainwashed by all the corporations out there trying to sell women's beauty and thinness, you could become a neurotic wreck trying to live by this standard.

Self-acceptance in the middle ground care of your body and looks with an emphasis on trying to live a peaceful life is the way to go.

Some women who have been abused, used as a sex object or don't like sex all that much, purposely on a subconscious level let themselves get fat and ugly to avoid intimacy and/ or sabotage sex with their husbands so any way you cut it, the relatioship with food, body image and sex is complicated and a source of tension in many women.

Books about eating disorders are at #616.85-89, #618.928 or RC552 and RJ506 at the library. Books about obesity in children are at #618.9239 or RJ399 at the library.

There are personal stories about eating disorders at #362.196 or RC552 at the library.

If You're Underweight

Most people are underweight because of an eating disorder or because of treatment for a chronic disease such as cancer.

You're underweight if other people remark on how skinny you are.

There are three types of thin people:

1.) Active people

2.) People with very few fat cells who get sick eating rich foods

3.) People who think the thinner you are the more beautiful you are

Some diseases lead to thinness like chronic dyspepsia, chronic diarrhea, the presence of parasites like tapeworm in the alimentary canal, liver disorders, diabetes mellitus, insomnia, constipation and sexual disorders.

Lack of appetite can result from an inadequate supply of vitamin B, which leads to low production of hydrochloric acid by the stomach. Hydrochloric acid is essential for the digestion of food and absorption of vitamins and minerals into the blood. It is, therefore, necessary that the daily diet should be rich in vitamin B for normal appetite. Foods rich in vitamin B are all whole grain cereals, blackstrap molasses, nuts, soyabean, eggs and butter.

Vegetable oil is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids.

Underweight persons should eat frequent small meals as they tend to feel full quickly.

All refined foods such as products containing white flour and sugar should be avoided,as they destroy health.

The diet should be tilted towards alkaline-forming foods such as fruits and vegetables. Alkaline foods should comprise 80 per cent of the diet. The other 20 per cent should consist of acid forming foods such as cereals and lentils.

Milk and figs can help you gain weight.

Eat your main meals but also high-calorie snacks like peanut butter and milk shakes with protein powder.

Eat before you go to bed. Put some food by your bed that you can eat if you wake up.

Drink milk.

Eat cheese.

Orthorexia Info

Orthorexia/ orthorexia nervosa is considered a mental disorder disorder for people who are obsessed with eating healthy to the point where it could kill them because they become malnourished eating just vegetables and no meat or otherwise restricting caloric intake so much.

These people are like anorexics in the sense that they won't eat fat, sugar or junk food.

Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified/ EDNOS

To me, EDNOS is another way for psychobabblists to make money off weak people.

You're not anorexic, you're not bulimic but you're obsessed with food. You get anxiety if you eat something that has a lot of calories like ice cream or pizza.

It could be anything where you don't feel that you measure up to society's beauty standards so you're always feeling bad about yourself.

Laxative Abuse Info

Women and men buy laxatives because they think it will help them poop out the food they eat by making it pass through the stomach and intestines without being properly digested.

Laxatives are a horrible eway to lose weight because they cause bloating and diarrhea. You could poop yourself at any time. You can't control it.

Do what I do. I eat high fiber foods. I eat apples, pears, oranges and cereal.
